Inspired by my friend Jimmy’s new blog over at http://the365blogchallenge.blogspot.com/2011/01/1sleepless-in-seattle.html, I’m going to try putting more focus on this blog and growing it, and also working more on my own blogs, including this one on a daily basis, as well as focus on getting my own portfolio put together more.

In theory, there’s enough artists in the world I could do a post about a new artist every day of the year for the rest of my life and still not cover all of them. I need to do this sort of stuff more to get my own creative juices flowing and think about things more to fight my own inhibitions and “writers block” when it comes to my own artwork.

Tonight I came across a lot of sketch books I have lots of stuff in that I’ve never digitized to put on my main blog at http://jeffthomann.wordpress.com yet. I also have a lot of stuff in my old portfolio that isn’t over there yet. I got lots to do. It’ll be hard to find the time to do it all since I’m also working on getting in shape for health reasons, so I’m trying to workout at least an hour or more a night when possible…

I updated and added some info on the Jim Burns entry tonight. I’ll do more for other posts in the future at some point.

Hey anyone out there that’s an Art Historian that wants to help with this project, shoot me a comment or something and we can start talking. I believe it’s possible to have multiple authors on a blog, and this is something I’d more then likely be willing to do for this blog if yo want to help out. The main idea is to get as much art history in here as possible, so more then one head and two hands is definitely a good idea.

Book that this list is being derived from: Infinite Worlds, The Fantastic Visions of Science Fiction Art by Vincent Di Fate. The reason I’m starting with this book is that it’s an awesome tome of sci fi related art history that usually gets glossed over in most traditional art history classes.

My plan for the future is to add other books in to the list over time. So far the above list, combined with previous posts up to now only goes about page 66 or so of this 218 page book. I plan to include as many artists as I can, both living, dead, contemporary, and ancient, friends, and folks I have never had the chance to meet yet. I think lots of places like wikipedia are nice to help out with studying art, but they have a long ways to go to get anywhere, and some lists like this blog will evolve in to will be a little complimentary to that sort of stuff. I don’t have tons of time on my hands to dedicate solely to this blog, but over time, I plan to work on it a little here and there daily, more or less the rest of my life. If you can tell from my other blogs, I like to google and study a lot of stuff, so I figure I can take on this task just as well as anyone else, and am detailed oriented enough to maybe do it better then other folks might be.

Jim Burns is a bit of a science fiction book cover illustrator.

I Love his work. His paintings seem to make use of the bright and bold primary colors to draw attention but also to play a role in the composition that draws the eye to look around the composition of the painting. I am inspired by his use of color, and think that same palette choice is close to what I aim for in some of my own works, or will aim for more in the future.

His portraits are simple yet show a lot of realistic facial gestures that adds a lot to the character of the paintings and makes the portrayed individuals seem to be more then just subjects of a portrait painting. I’m not too keen on the central location of the main figures in some of his works, but that’s likely the publisher’s fault since many book illustration publishers seem to like that sort of placement of images on book covers so that the image does not overpower the text. However, I am glad to see that the image and text does integrate together nicely on the book covers, and that there is some thought being put in to working with the figure/space relations and picture framing elements to help with that integration.
